Head of State

Head of State is a movie starring famed actor/comedian Chris Rock and it is one of the most interesting black movies on the list. Chris Rock is always memorable as a comedian but he takes it further with his career in film even making his own feature films such as Good Hair. Chris Rock has appeared in various other films of all kinds in addition to black films. In the movie Head of State Chris Rock play a neighborhood Alderman by the name of Mays Gilliam s and when he is about to become red lined from his current position. When the party’s frontrunner dies in an untimely manner Gilliam is chosen to run for president of the United States instead. Some of the people that are in Mays’ life include his brother Mitch Gilliam who is supporting him in the run for the white house as his running mate. This character is played by the late Bernie Mac and becomes one of the funniest characters in the movie by popular opinion.

In addition to this since Mays becomes a frontrunner his ex girlfriend who dumped him because of his lack of ambition has a change of heart suddenly and seeks a chance to become the now famous Gillian’s first lady if he wins. Other characters in the movie that are influential to Gillian are his campaign manager Martin and the woman who he really loves Lisa Clark. While his exgirlfriend tries everything to get him back Gillian realizes that Lisa is the only person who really believes in him and he does everything in his power to get her affection. In all the movie is filled with laughs and some heartfelt moments and Bernie Mac gives an outstanding performance as Gilliam’s brother and running mate. This is definitely a movie to add to anyone’s collection of black films.
